Specifications
The Hatsan AT44 is a PCP or precharged pneumatic air rifle that is available in .177, .22 and .25 calibers. It is capable of accommodating a max air cylinder pressure of 200 bar. The barrel measures 19.4 in. long, but its overall length is 39.4”.
This quality air rifle only weighs 7.3 lbs., and sports an adjustable butt pad and two-stage adjustable trigger. By default, the unit does not come with an open front and rear sight, but both weaver and 11mm mounts can be attached.
Features
As mentioned above, the Hatsan AT44-10 is available in 3 different calibers. Each caliber allows the gun to achieve various max muzzle velocity/energy, as well as different max number of shots. However, the manufacturer indicates 40 as the total number of possible effective shots, regardless of caliber type.
Some users claim to get more or less that 40 consistent shots, but the variances do not deviate too far from the optimal shot number. If you were to use up all the air inside the default cylinder, the overall shot count will have quite the gap between the three caliber sizes.
For the .177 model, firing to empty the air container will yield around 80 shots. As for the .22 and .25 calibers, the total shots doable until all air is consumed are roughly 70 and 60, respectively. Just note, the further you shoot beyond 40 discharges the weaker and more inconsistent the shots will be.
As for the clip sizes, the one in the .25 can store up to 9 pellets at a time. The .22 and .177 on the other hand, are both able to carry up to 10 pellets. All three come with a circular clip, and can fire repeatedly.
The clip also features an anti-double-feed mechanism. What it basically does is avert the loading of more than one pellet into the barrel, which is notably beneficial for repeaters such as this product. The clip is fitted into the top of the receiver and securely locked by a brass bolt.
More importantly, this non-spring magazine employs a raised boss on its rear side, meaning it can only be inserted one way. Plus, the side groove of the barrel housing will not only allow you to see the emptied slots after firing, but it is also an effective means to top up new bullets without removing the clip.
When it comes to maximum muzzle velocity/energy, the values also differ for each caliber diameter. The .177 build is able to reach 1070 fps, 970 fps for the .22, and 870 fps for the .25 caliber. These numbers are the highest that each caliber can attain with a full air compartment, and without any form of restriction.
Speaking of restriction, some AT44-10 air rifles may have different max fps ceiling values, depending on the country or state you are living in. This is because some places have different animal rights and hunting laws. Moreover, the fps will also decrease as air is expended, and can vary in strength depending on the type of pellet used.
Overall, the gun fires quietly, not to mention it is very precise. A person who is experienced can effectively shoot at 50-75 yards without much significant changes in accuracy.
The standard model of this air rifle sports a black synthetic design. It has a black rubber butt pad at the rear for comfortable recoil support. Furthermore, the butt pad can be adjusted in height, and can also rotate a few degrees, giving you plenty of probable angles to work with until you find a setup that is most suitable to your style.
Unfortunately, you need an Allen wrench to make the modifications. Therefore, unless you are fine putting your ongoing hunt to a temporary halt just to redo your adjustments, you should finalize everything beforehand. Check out the operations manual for more information.
On a lighter note, the gun and butt pad fashion into a well-balanced profile (similar to a Monte Carlo), which makes the rifle nearly perfect for ambidextrous use. I say nearly because the sidelever is confined solely to the right side of the receiver, which is slightly more favorable to right-handed users than left-handed individuals.
You can separate the air cylinder from the rifle, allowing you to simply stick in a new one after the current container is emptied and detached. If you do not like the idea of lugging a huge air container or tank whenever you go out hunting, then this setup will appeal to you best. The cylinder also comes with its own calibrated gauge, allowing you to correctly observe how much pressure is left or being filled in.
Both manual and automatic safety mechanics are available on this model. The button for it is conveniently located just behind the scope rail. A pulled out position indicates the safety is on.
The automatic safety will always put the rifle in safety mode on your behalf, after every cock. There is no workaround for this, which might irk some, especially expert hunters. Nevertheless, this feature only ensures that you and the people around you are far from sustaining grave injuries.
